“In the Newport Shipyard, Cole Brauer is busy preparing for the biggest sail of her life.
“I’m feeling good,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to go around the world.”
She’s competing in the upcoming Global Solo Challenge, a solo non-stop race around the world, on her Class40 yacht ‘First Light.’”
She’s the only woman competing and at 29 years old, she’s also the youngest and smallest, but none of that phases her.
“It’s just being another competitor,” she said. “I don’t really know what it feels like to be any different. It’s just I got this opportunity and I’m running with it as long as I can.”
While she’ll have enough supplies to last 167 days, she’s aiming to set a world record for her type of boat and complete the race in under 137.
“We have a lot of technology on the boat that I actually will not be alone,” she said. “So we have Starlink so I can actually FaceTime people while offshore. So the modern-day technology has totally changed this around the world alone situation.”
